It’s all about the dollar bills, bills, bills…

Scott Campbell’s upcoming solo exhibition, Using All The Freedoms We Have, at Over The Influence in Hong Kong, turns a critical eye on the omnipresence of money in contemporary art. Running from 14 December 2018 to 12 January 2019, the show features striking, large-scale sculptures that are as provocative as they are visually arresting.

The Los Angeles–based artist, renowned for tattooing celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Sting, Courtney Love, and Orlando Bloom, brings his signature precision to paper, layering laser-cut sheets of uncut American dollar bills over iconic imagery. Wealth, mortality, and ephemerality collide in his work: skulls, memento mori objects, and sunken reliefs underscore the transient nature of material desire, evoking the vanitas motifs of 17th-century Dutch painting.

Through these layered compositions, Campbell highlights the paradoxes of capitalism—its power, its allure, and its inescapable decay. The effect is equal parts seductive and unsettling, a reminder that no amount of money can escape time.

Using All The Freedoms We Have takes place at Over The Influence (1/F, 159 Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong), from 14 December 2018 to 12 January 2019. Entry is free.
